Tuck’t In: A Walking Tour of Historic Prospect Hill Cemetery Nantucket, MA
Arrives on Island!

A 200-year look through the chronicles of whaling captains, mariners, merchants, writers, artists, educators, Civil War Veterans and more.

Tuck’t In: A Walking Tour of Historic Prospect Hill Cemetery Nantucket, MA was written by Paula Lundy Levy for the Prospect Hill Cemetery Association, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. The book contains numerous accounts of many well known and lesser known Nantucketers. These chronicles contain a broad array of period images courtesy of the Nantucket Historical Association, the Maria Mitchell Association, as well as contemporary photographs of the cemetery today. There is intricate mapping of the property (full maps and reference by chronicle) and two cross-referenced indices: a) by name and b) by lot #.

Prospect Hill is rich in island history, providing invaluable insights into the lives of the people dating from the founding of the cemetery in 1810. The stories emanate from diaries, personal letters, memoirs, newspaper accounts and extensive historical investigation. You can feel the emotions of the island over the years by reading the stories originating from Nantucket’s incredible global shipping adventures during the glory years of whaling, through our Civil War history and up to contemporary times. And yet, today, two hundred years later, Prospect Hill is still a viable and active cemetery with a new cremation garden built into the hillside, expanding burial choices.

Tuck’t In is a who’s who of Nantucket history. The stories are incredibly rich in history, lore and insight into the island and its people. The Prospect Hill Cemetery Association believes it is important to preserve our island history by recounting the stories of people in our historic burial ground.

“The book began as a simple database of the people interred in the cemetery,” explained Paula Lundy Levy. “Once a handful of chronicles were assembled, it became excitingedly apparent that the lives of the people, along with their individual and collective stories, were rich in historic and emotional content. And what a way to preserve some of the island’s past,” Levy concluded.

Founded in 1810, Prospect Hill Cemetery just celebrated its 200th anniversary. The proceeds from the book will fund the preservation, conservation and restoration at the historic cemetery. Prospect Hill Cemetery will continue to be a burial site for loved ones, a place of local history and genealogy and a comfort and joy for all. Who knows, 200 years from now, new stories with new names may emerge.
